Tunstall claims J.V. title
Hands BHS first district loss

By CHASE YOUNG - Bulletin Sports Writer

Tunstall’s junior varsity volleyball team earned the Piedmont District’s jayvee championship with a 3-1 win over Bassett on Tuesday night at Bassett.

“This team has beat us pretty easily both times we’ve played them, and my team just came ready to play tonight,” said Tunstall coach Matt Beard. “They were hustling like crazy. We’ve never moved like this before. “

Tunstall (15-6 overall, 5-3 Piedmont District) earned the win in four games 25-21, 25-22, 23-25 and 25-21, as the Bengals took their first loss in the PD this season.

“The intensity has got to be up. One person can’t carry the whole team,” said Bengal coach Niquita Martin. “Everybody’s got to work together and play together in order to bring out a win.”

After taking the first two games and dropping the third, the teams battled in the fourth, tying 11 times before Tunstall’s Joelle Bray stepped to the line and pulled her team within one point of the win (24-21).

Bassett (17-3 overall, 8-0 PD) followed with a serve into the net for the loss.

“Those girls just kept serving as hard as they could and trying to make them pass it up, and that was probably the key,” said Beard. “We didn’t miss many serves, and that was big.”

Bray had 12 service points and three aces.

Tunstall’s Taylor Wray added 18 points, 10 aces and six kills; Corbin Holder had nine service points, six kills and four aces, and both Tiffany McGregor and Jordan Moorefield had six kills.

Bassett’s Kayla Keith had 27 service points, six kills and one ace; Jordan Joyce had 11 service points and 11 kills; Ariana Covington added 13 attacks and seven kills, and Courtney Clark had 13 service points.
