Eight PD teams heading to regionals
Martinsville boys, Patrick County girls earn top seeds

Monday, February 22, 2010

By JOHNNY BUCK - Bulletin Sports Editor

Eight Piedmont District basketball teams earned Region IV Tournament berths, headlined by the Martinsville boys and Patrick County girls, both No. 1 seeds.

The top four boys and girls teams from the PD’s regular season standings will get the chance to play at least one more game this year, with the first games set for Tuesday night.

Semifinal action will take place Wednesday, and regional champions will be crowned Friday night. Teams that lose in the quarterfinals or semifinals will see their seasons end. Teams that prove lucky enough to make it to the regional championship game — or skilled enough, as the case may be — will advance to the state tournament regardless of the outcome of their regional title matches.

Now that the Virginia High School League offers Division 3 and Division 4 state championships in Group AA basketball, some of the PD’s teams have been divided and cannot possibly face each other for the rest of the season.

That means, for example, that the boys basketball teams of Martinsville and Bassett could both go on to be state champions this year.

In Region IV, Division 3 boys action, Martinsville (17-4 overall, 8-0 PD regular season) earned the top seed for the second straight year and has a first-round bye after winning the PD regular season and tournament titles. On Wednesday night at Tazewell Middle School, the Bulldogs will play the winner of the No. 4 Richlands/No. 5 Grundy game.

Patrick County (5-16 overall, 1-7 PD) earned a No. 7 seed, the lowest in the D-3 bracket. PCHS will play at Graham at 7 p.m. Tuesday in its first regional tourney game in more than a decade.

Martinsville’s potential playoff schedule could be worse. Cave Spring High School, defending state champions that beat the Bulldogs in the regional semis a year ago, is a No. 3 seed. CSHS cannot meet Martinsville until the regional title game this year, however, meaning the Knights and their 6-foot-11 center Josh Henderson, who will play at Vanderbilt University next season on athletic scholarship, cannot end Martinsville’s season. Even if the Dogs lost to Cave Spring in the regional finals, MHS still would advance to the state tourney.

In Division 4 boys pairings, Bassett (12-7, 6-2) earned a No. 3 seed and will host No. 6 Blacksburg at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Magna Vista (6-9, 4-4) got the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5 Christiansburg at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

In Division 3 girls basketball, Patrick County (14-9, 8-1) earned the top seed and the first-round bye that goes with it. PCHS, the defending Region IV, D-3 champs, will host a 7 p.m. home game Wednesday against the winner of the No.4 Tunstall/No. 5 Grundy game, which is set to take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Tunstall enters the game with a 14-7 overall record (3-5 PD).

The Division 4 girls slate has No. 3 Bassett (14-6. 7-2) hosting No. 6 Pulaski at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Magna Vista (9-8, 3-5) earned the No. 7 seed and will travel to face No. 2 Salem at 7 p.m. Tuesday. If both the Lady Bengals and Lady Warriors win, they will face each other at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Regional tournament seedings are based on a VHSL points system, which rewards teams for a combination of winning games and playing a strong schedule.
