The Stroller

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

MONDAY’S WORD was fealty (FEE-uhl-tee). It means allegiance; faithfulness. “Barbour believed Christian conservatives represented a critical constituency, and he looked for opportunities to display his fealty to them.” — Dan Balz and Ronald Brownstein, “Storming the Gates”

TODAY’S WORD is lave (LAYV). "There are few traces of man's hand to be seen. The water laves the shore as it did a thousand years ago." (Henry David Thoreau, “Walden”)

Bill Adkins, president of the board of directors of the Fieldale Community Center, told the Stroller on Monday that two weeks ago on Wednesday, Buster Ferguson, longtime manager of the Fieldale Community, suffered a stroke and is hospitalized at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He said Buster’s friends have stepped in to keep the center operating “as long as it takes.” Among them is Becky Roberts Hutchens. “Becky grew up in the community center and knows all the ins and outs of its operation,” Adkins said. “During Buster’s absence, she is doing the day-to-day business of the center as well as taking suggestions on what the center needs and will have to have to succeed during these (economically trying) times.” If you have suggestions, you can visit with Hutchens at the center or drop off your suggestion. “One thing is evident,” he said, “we can always use more volunteers.”

Parents of sixth-graders at Laurel Park Middle School are asked to attend a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday on “6th Grade Parent SOL Night.” A release from the school states that reviews will be done on statewide material and achievement from state data for math, English and social studies. Upcoming classroom assignments, homework assignments and activities will be previewed as well.

Spring forward is the rule for getting daylight-saving time correct. That means setting your clock up one hour before retiring Saturday night.

A free session on Tax Issues Affecting Seniors will be presented to Seniors in the Know at the Thursday meeting at 10 a.m. at the Spencer-Penn Centre. Creed Taylor from a local tax service will address common tax issues that seniors may experience and offer suggestions for handling them.

Guests at Friday’s meeting of Women of Faith, Walking by Faith will be Pam Cobbler, speaker; Jackie Belcher, musical program; and J.T. Foley, speaking and demonstrating “growing things.” The meeting will be from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the Dutch Inn. Brunch is $9 a person. For brunch reservations, call 632-3152 or 647-8137.

The Stroller was told that a Fieldale man “has egg on his face” after he left his keys in the ignition, “for the first time ever,” only to return a short time later to find his vehicle had been stolen around noon in broad daylight one day last week.
