Roundup: Bassett softball prevails
Lady Bengals top Lady Blue Demons, 4-1

Thursday, March 18, 2010

By CHASE YOUNG - Bulletin Sports Writer

Bassett’s softball team downed Christiansburg 4-1 Wednesday at Bassett to remain undefeated at the onset of the season.

“We needed a game like this today. We needed somebody that’s got a good ball team, and obviously they’re good,” said BHS coach Terry Triplett. “It was a good game for us, a good challenge for us. I thought we responded well.”

With their bunts working nicely, Bassett took control of the contest with two runs in the home half of the third inning.

After a bunt-single from Morgan Mays put leadoff batter Morgan Spangler at second, Lauren Snead hit a sacrifice bunt to put both teammates in scoring position. Devyn Varner, Bassett’s pitcher, then followed with a shot to Christiansburg’s first baseman to bring in Spangler. A wild pitch on the next at bat allowed Mays to come home for a 2-0 lead.

“I thought they put the ball in play a couple of times, and I thought our inability to cover the bunt was the difference in the game, and us not hitting,” said CHS coach Ronald Osbourne.

The Bengals (2-0 overall) tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning when Snead hit a double to center field to bring in Mays, and Varner followed with her second RBI of the night, a double to left, that brought in Snead.

“As a team, we’ve worked a lot on hitting this year, and it doesn’t surprise me that we hit well, but I’m glad we did, and I hope we can keep it up,” said Varner.

Varner got the complete-game win for the Bengals, allowing one earned run and four hits. She struck out two.

Mays went 2-for-3 on the night with two singles and two runs scored. Snead was 1-for-3, as was Varner.

The Blue Demons (0-1 overall) were unable to answer the Bengals’ four runs until the seventh inning, when Jordan Benedict sent a grounder to short to bring home McKenna Hellman.

Bassett did not commit an error in the game, and Snead, the shortstop, had six put outs.

The Bengals’ next game is Friday at the Franklin County Tournament.
