Field to Friends, a local foods coalition: 4-6 p.m. at the Spencer-Penn Centre. The speaker will be Herman Ellison, director of the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, who will talk about the upcoming farm census program and its importance to local farm programming. The public is welcome.

Piedmont Writers Group: 6:30 p.m. at Piedmont Arts Association.

Free summer reading program for kindergarten through fifth grade begins at the Spencer-Penn Centre: 1-2 p.m. and will continue on Tuesdays throughout the summer. Activities include crafts, music and games, all directed toward reading. Call 957-5757 for more information.

Martinsville/Henry County TRIAD S.A.L.T. Council presents the 16th Anniversary Senior Appreciation Day Picnic: 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Jack Dalton Park. It is free; lunch will be catered. There will be comments by Henry County Sheriff Lane Perry; Martinsville Police Chief Mike Rogers; Martinsville Sheriff Steve Draper; and Mickey Mixon, community outreach coordinator from the office of the Virginia Attorney General. This grant helps qualified unemployed/under-employed adults enroll in college training programs to improve their work force skills and ability to obtain new employment.
