“Phill-up the Bus” project: 4-7 p.m. at Wal-mart to collect donations of supplies for local schools. This is sponsored by Altrusa International of Martinsville & Henry County Inc.

Red Cross Blood Drive: Noon to 6 p.m. at Blackberry Baptist Church.

Stepping Stones yard sale: 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the National Guard Armory.

It’s College Night at the Rives Theater: Doors open at 8 p.m. with Widespread Panic tribute band Machine Funk. Admission is $5 with college I.D. and $7 without. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

American Legion Post 42 yard sale: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and Saturday at the building on Cabell Street near Blue Ridge Rehab. It will feature furniture, household items, tools, antiques, a collection of original Cabbage Patch Dolls and more. Free coffee and donuts. All proceeds will benefit local veterans.

Fraternal Order of Police, Patrick Henry Lodge 73: Breakfast/meeting at 8 a.m. at The Sirloin House on Commonwealth Boulevard. The agenda will include the nomination/election of the lodge’s executive board, the upcoming F.O.P. State Convention and upcoming speeches by congressional/senatorial candidates. All law enforcement officers and their families are encouraged to attend.

Smith River Cleanup: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., sponsored by the Smith River Chapter of Trout Unlimited. Meet at the Gravely Nature Preserve, 2525 Eggleston Falls Road, Ridgeway, at 9 a.m. for river assignments. The cleanup will continue until 2 p.m. when a cookout will be held.

Free VIN (vehicle identification number) etching: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Martinsville Fire & EMS, 65 W. Church St. Bring a valid driver’s license and current registration (only a person named on the registration can authorize the VIN etching). Sponsored by area law enforcement agencies, the city fire and EMS and the Virginia State Police HEAT program.

“Free Blood Screening” from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Bassett Branch Library, 3969 Fairystone Park Highway, Bassett. Health information specialist Sharon Sleeper, RN, will be available to talk with interested patrons and offer information on requested health topics. A free blood pressure screening will also be available. Walk-ins welcome.
