Editorial: In praise of dental clinic
Sunday, September 8, 2013
In the past seven years, the Community Dental Clinic has provided more than $5 million worth of care to area residents.
Broken down, that provided 11,217 fillings, 1,034 root canals and 9,413 extractions in 22,551 patient visits. Those are impressive numbers.
The clinic is operated by the Piedmont Virginia Dental Health Foundation with volunteer services of about 80 percent of the local dentists and students from the Dental School at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. It has operated on grants and donations and, like most nonprofit groups, always needs more funding to meet growing needs.
The dental clinic on Fayette Street provides a tremendous service to people who otherwise might not receive dental care. Untreated dental problems can lead to further medical issues, not to mention discomfort, for adults and children alike.
We commend the foundation, the clinic staff, VCU and the area’s dental community for providing quality services for people in need.
