The Virginia State Police has released the names of the two men involved in a fatal auto accident Saturday night in Collinsville.
Roy Christopher “Chris” Meeks, 44, of Martinsville (Snow Creek area), was pronounced dead at the scene on Kings Mountain Road, according to a state police news release and Collins Funeral Home.
Terry Yates, 39, of Martinsville, was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., for injuries he sustained in the crash, the release stated.
Yates was in fair condition at the hospital late Sunday afternoon, according to a nursing supervisor there.
The accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. Saturday on Kings Mountain Road (Route 174) one-tenth of a mile east of U.S. 220 business in Henry County, the release stated.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1994 Ford Explorer was traveling westbound on Route 174 when it allegedly crossed the center line and collided with a 2001 Nissan Xterra head on, according to the release.
Meeks was driving the Nissan, the release stated. It was not known Sunday if he was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash, the release added.
Yates was driving the Explorer, according to the release. He was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash and was ejected from his vehicle as a result of the impact, the release added.
The investigation is continuing and no further information about the crash is available at this time, the release stated.
