Many helped during fire
Sunday, March 9, 2014
I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their help Monday evening at the structure fire the Martinsville Fire & EMS Department had at the American Furniture warehouses on Aaron Street.
First, a big thank you goes out to the 911 Communications Center, which quickly dedicated a dispatcher to our event, and they were on the spot with consistently monitoring our radio traffic and handling our needs.
Thanks to the following city departments that assisted us: Interim Police Chief Eddie Cassady and his men and women who quickly helped with traffic control and let us use their mobile command unit throughout the incident; Dave Johnston with the water department, who was on scene at the command post to make sure we had the water supply we needed to fight such a large fire; the electric department, which quickly cut the power to the area so that firefighters could work safely without the danger of getting into high power lines; the public works department, which assisted with blocking streets and bringing fuel to the scene to fill up our engines. Also, to City Sheriff Steve Draper who was at the command post ready to help us with anything that we needed.
To Henry County Public Safety, Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department, Bassett Volunteer Fire Department, Fieldale Volunteer Fire Department, Dyers Store Volunteer Fire Department, Collinsville Volunteer Fire Department and Stone Ambulance Service, thank you for the manpower and equipment you brought to the scene. Thanks to all the other volunteer fire departments in Henry County that let us know that they had manpower and equipment standing by at their stations if we needed them.
Thank you to all the local restaurants and businesses (Hardee’s, Papa John’s, Little Caesars, Chick-fil-A, Mi Ranchito, Wendy’s, Burger King, Walsh’s Chicken, Buck Fuels, Bojangles) for the hot food and coffee that you supplied. Also, a big thank you to all the citizens who brought water, soup, coffee, drinks and blankets to the command post. All of this was made possible by a request from Charles Roark with Cable 18, and it was all truly appreciated.
Finally, I want to thank all the men and women (paid and volunteer) with the Martinsville Fire & EMS Department for all your efforts throughout this major event. You all did an excellent job as always and I’m mighty proud of all of you. Also, thanks to departmental Chaplain Tim Hunt for standing by with us at the command post.
I know that I have probably left someone out and for that I’m truly sorry. But, trust me your help was greatly appreciated.
