A rallying community and a small business grant may be enough to keep the doors open at Woody’s Supermarket, a staple in the town of Ridgeway.

Business owner Billy Wheeler said that about a week ago, he was making plans to close the supermarket.

Alarm saves a life
In duplex fire

Fire officials are crediting a smoke alarm with saving a man’s life in a fire Friday morning that extensively damaged a duplex in Martinsville.

No one was hurt.

Cotton Trent, chief of the Ridgeway District Volunteer Fire Department, said Ryan Ward lives in the unit on Rivermont Heights Road where the fire started. He was awakened by a smoke alarm Friday morning.

Ward got out of the unit and alerted the resident in the other unit, Danny Asbury, who also got out, Trent said.

Jet carrying 162 lost over stormy Indonesian waters

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Aircraft and ships that spent several hours searching Indonesian waters turned up no sign of an AirAsia plane that disappeared Sunday with 162 people on board in airspace possibly thick with dense storm clouds, strong winds and lightning, officials said.

Before they had hardly had time to put their Christmas gifts away, Sheree Lawrence and Lisa Ramsey set out on a bargain hunt.

Lawrence, of Penhook, and Ramsey, of Rocky Mount, left their homes around 5 a.m. Friday for a marathon day of shopping that has become an annual tradition.
