MHS forfeits game after melee

A melee that erupted near the end of Friday night’s boys basketball game between Martinsville and G.W.-Danville resulted in the Bulldogs forfeiting the game.

With Martinsville trailing 49-55 and 4:10 remaining in the sold-out game at the Martinsville Middle School, a fast break for G.W. led to a confrontation between players under the visitor’s basket.

Boys & Girls Clubs lose grant
Parents asked to contribute

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge is asking parents for financial donations for the first time in its history after being turned down for annual grants totaling about $423,000.

Subsequent efforts by BGCBR to cut costs and raise funds have not been enough to cover the clubs’ expenses.

This week, 10 area men gathered at Chatmoss Country Club to share gifts, swap tales and enjoy a Christmas luncheon together — for the 54th year in a row.

Barry Greene, owner of The Greene Co., said the tradition began in 1960 in the back room at Wampler’s, a drug store and luncheonette in back of the former Globman’s Department Store.

Sony decision irks theater owner

One of the area’s two movie theaters had been scheduled to show “The Interview,” the comedy film that apparently incensed North Korean leaders and led to a cyber attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment and a threat by hackers to carry out a terrorist attack.

In an unprecedented step, Sony canceled the Dec. 25 release of the comedy, which stars Seth Rogen and James Franco.

Charles Roark, owner of Hollywood Cinema, is not happy about Sony’s decision.

How will U.S. respond to Sony hack?

WASHINGTON (AP) — The detective work blaming North Korea for the Sony hacker break-in appears so far to be largely circumstantial, The Associated Press has learned. The dramatic conclusion of a Korean role is based on subtle clues in the hacking tools left behind and the involvement of at least one computer in Bolivia previously traced to other attacks blamed on the North Koreans.
