Sewer project advances

City will continue fluoridating water

Martinsville will continue adding fluoride to its drinking water — its practice for many years.

After hearing from a local dentist and studying information about fluoride in public water supplies, Martinsville City Council on Tuesday took no action on a city resident’s recent request that the city stop fluoridating its water.

Church website hacked
ISIS group claims credit in apparently random cyber attack

An organization claiming to be the terrorist group ISIS hacked an unlikely target recently: the website of a local Presbyterian church.

The Rev. David Gilleran, pastor at Hope Presbyterian Church at 2331 Old Chatham Road, Martinsville, said that through a strange sequence of events, his church’s website apparently was hacked by the extremist group on Jan. 22. It remained out of commission for two days.

The Henry County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a resolution honoring the Magna Vista High School football team for winning its first state championship.

The Warriors won their first Virginia High School League Group 3A State Football Championship on Dec. 13, defeating Lafayette High School 25-19 at Liberty University.

County gets 'clean' audit

Henry County received a clean audit for the last fiscal year, according to Robin Jones of the public accounting firm Creedle, Jones and Alga P.C.

Jones briefed the Henry County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday on the highlights of the audit of county accounts for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014. The county received an “unmodified opinion” or “clean opinion,” she told the board.

Smith seeks third term as Patrick sheriff

Incumbent Dan Smith will seek a third term as Patrick County sheriff in the November election.

Smith, 42, who announced his candidacy this week, is a former Martinsville police officer who was first elected Patrick County’s sheriff in 2007.
