Sewer issues aired
Portion of line has collapsed, council is told

A roughly 200-foot portion of a major sewer line has collapsed and should be replaced soon at an estimated cost of about $3 million, Martinsville City Council learned Thursday.

That portion of the line is between Walker Road and the Smith River. The entire 6.2-mile line, which basically runs along the river from near Fieldale to the city’s wastewater treatment plant near Forest Park Country Club, needs about $25 million in repairs and upgrades, city officials and consultants told the council during a work session.

300 miles covered in search

Law enforcement officials in two states have covered about 300 miles of roadsides as they continue to search for a missing Patrick County woman, Patrick Sheriff Dan Smith reported Thursday.

Shelly Gravely, 34, has not been heard from since late Nov. 14. Police have said little about what they believe may have happened to the mother of two.

A new program at the Fab Lab, located in uptown Martinsville at the Artisan Center, brings the maker movement to the community.

“It’s a different thing to do on a Monday night,” said Barbara Vigue, who attended the Nov. 3 “Food for Geeks” Maker Mondays event. “It’s really neat to design certain things on the computer and watch them print out in 3D.”

Warming shelter plans set
By BEN R. WILLIAMS - Bulletin Staff Writer

When the thermometer dips to 32 degrees this winter, a warm bed and a hot meal will be waiting for area homeless people — men, women and children — at the Salvation Army of Martinsville.

Capt. Shauntrice Williams led a planning meeting Thursday at the Salvation Army at 603 S. Memorial Blvd., which will be the site of the shelter. About a dozen representatives from area churches and service organizations, including Henry County-Martinsville Department of Social Services, Grace Network, Red Cross and STEP (Support to Eliminate Poverty), attended.

The parade will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday in uptown Martinsville; the forecast is for sunny skies with a high of 52 degrees. The rain date is 4 p.m. Sunday.
