The New College Institute wants area residents to think locally when it comes to education and workforce training services.

Rather than seeking professional development out of town, the Henry-Martinsville Social Services department worked with New College Institute (NCI) to provide customized training for its employees. The two organizations collaborated to develop training programs specific to the needs of the department’s employees.

Marina funds beat outlook

Philpott Marina exceeded revenue expectations during its first busy season, and county officials are confident it will at least break even during the slower winter months.

Henry County Deputy Administrator Dale Wagoner said Friday that between January and September, expenditures at the marina totaled $66,000. During its busiest season — from May to September — the marina generated $86,000 in revenue, exceeding expectations.

In addition, many of the expenditures were one-time, non-recurring costs, noted Wagoner.

Albert Harris Elementary School gets a big hug

All 552 Albert Harris Elementary students and their teachers went outside on Friday to celebrate American Education Week and hugged the school. The students and their teachers lined all the way around the school and held hands. According to the National Education Association, American Education Week is intended to provide an opportunity to “celebrate public education and honor individuals who are making a difference in ensuring that every child receives a quality education.” (Bulletin photo)

Supervisors to consider Barrows Mill resolution

The Henry County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday will consider a resolution that could pave the way for Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) assistance to make improvements to Barrows Mill Road.

According to board documents, the supervisors will consider the approval of a resolution authorizing an application to VDOT’s Revenue Sharing Program for the remaining cost of the project.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — First came the big storm, then the big dig. Now comes the big melt.

Residents of flood-prone areas around Buffalo should move valuables up from the basement, pack a bag and prepare for the possibility of evacuation as up to 7 feet of melting snow posed the threat of flooding, Gov. Andrew Cuomo warned Sunday.
