  • 4 ounces German chocolate
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1?2 cup shortening
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1?2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1?4 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk, divided
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 5 eggs
Melt German chocolate in microwave with 1?2 cup water for 1 and 1?2 to 2 minutes and let cool.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease three 9-inch layer pans.
Melt butter and put shortening in it. Cream together.
Combine flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder and salt in bowl.
To the butter mixture, add flour mixture, 3?4 cup buttermilk and vanilla. Stir until dry ingredients are moistened. Beat at medium speed of electric mixer for 2 minutes, scraping sides when necessary.
Add melted chocolate, eggs and remaining buttermilk. Continue beating.
Pour batter into prepared pans and bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes. Once cooled, frost with Coconut-Pecan Frosting.
