  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 2 TBS white vinegar
  • 5 cups self-rising flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp. ginger
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
Cream butter and sugar in a mixing bowl. Add egg, molasses and vinegar. Mix well.
Sift flour. Together add ginger, cinnamon and cloves to flour and mix gently. Add to liquids one cup at a time, stirring well after each addition. Roll out to about 1/8 inch. Cut into shapes. In each shape that will be for hanging, cut a hole before baking. Bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes. Decorate with icing, gum drops, peppermint, candy canes and other candy (see icing recipe). Glue the candy pieces on the gingerbread with the icing.
