There is one more week before schools resume in Henry and Patrick counties (eight days, actually) and in Martinsville, but parents and administrators likely are taking cues from school districts around the nation where some classes have resumed and more will resume this week. At many students immediately were sent into quarantine, and the anxiety level is high. College students also are collecting for the start of classes. In the Martinsville-area an annual rite of school support -- the Back2School program, which provides supplies-stuffed backpacks, new shoes and socks and a scripture lesson -- went drive-thru and satellite this past weekend. The 17 churches that participated each handed a piece of the distribution. We have photographs. Martinsville had two new cases and one new hospitalization this morning. Meanwhile many states continue to set daily records for new COVID-19 cases and deaths. And worldwide cases now have surpassed 18 million as deaths approach 700,000. Deaths in the U.S. today will surpass 155,000. The Virginia Department of Health reports this morning reported there have been 93,106 cases and 2,218 deaths statewide -- no new deaths since Sunday. Some 8,018 people have been hospitalized. Henry County has had 511 cases, with 58 hospitalizations and 6 deaths. Martinsville has had 171 cases, with 26 hospitalizations and 3 deaths. Patrick County has had 115 cases including 24 hospitalizations and 3 deaths. Franklin County has had 160 cases, 8 hospitalizations and 1 death. Danville has reported 330 cases, and Pittsylvania County has had 354. Johns Hopkins University's real-time map showed 18,104,056 cases worldwide and 689,922 deaths. In the U.S. there are 4,668,336. There have been 154,860 deaths in the U.S.
