A 12th death from COVID-19 in Franklin County was announced this morning by the Virginia Department of Health. The death showed up in daily data from the VDH, but it could have occurred most anytime. VDH waits for death certificates to verify cause before adding it to its database. This is the 102nd death in the West Piedmont Health District and the seventh this week. Meanwhile the district continued to pile up new cases, with 83 reported Friday. Henry County added 36 to its total, and Franklin County, which has surged since Sept. 1, added 31. Martinsville had 13, and Patrick County had 3. Henry County also added another hospitalization....Late Thursday Mulberry Creek, a senior-care facility in Martinsville, announced it had new cases among both residents and staff and was taking immediate precautions....The leading cause of recent spikes in cases and deaths in the West Piedmont Health District? Social gatherings, churches and offices. The surge in cases has been dramatic -- 91 and 3 deaths reported Thursday -- and officials warn individuals to use better judgment....The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a statement to the public to celebrate Thanksgiving with those in their house, limiting visitors and outside exposures to the virus....Pfizer this morning said it would ask the FDA for a speedy approval of its vaccine, with doses perhaps being available in December....The producers of one of the nation’s largest gun shows, in Falls Church, have canceled the event after losing a legal challenge to newly imposed pandemic restrictions in Virginia....Italian officials said citizens there should begin vaccination in January....The Virginia Department of Health reports this morning there have been 213,331 cases and 3,912 deaths statewide -- up 16 from Thursday. Some 13,914 people have been hospitalized. Henry County has had 1,688 cases, with 165 hospitalizations and 39 deaths. Martinsville has had 608 cases, with 75 hospitalizations and 24 deaths. Patrick County has had 415 cases including 62 hospitalizations and 27 deaths. Franklin County has had 1,374 cases, 52 hospitalizations and 12 deaths. Danville has reported 1,492 cases (47 deaths), and Pittsylvania County has had 1,565 (21 deaths). Johns Hopkins University's real-time map showed 57,042,406 cases worldwide and 1,363,182 deaths. In the U.S. there have been 11,720,318 cases and 252,564 deaths because of COVID-19.
