There are 15 more cases this morning in the West Piedmont Health District, and there were 2 more hospitalizations (both in Martinsville). Henry County residents accounted for 10 of the new cases, with 3 in Franklin County, and 1 each in Martinsville and Patrick County. The district how has had more than 1,700 cases, but the death toll has held at 36. Virginia and Virginia Tech were scheduled to play football against each other on Sept. 18, but that game reportedly has been canceled/postponed because of positive COVID-19 tests on the Va.Tech team. No more details are available. A woman in Virginia also walked 8,000 miles to donate a kidney during the pandemic. Dr. Anthony Fauci said Friday that he didn't expect the nation to return to normal until the last quarter of 2021. And presidential candidate Joe Biden said he had formed a committee to develop a pandemic response plan to employ should he be elected. The U.S. moved inexorably toward 6.5 million cases and 200,000 deaths, both of which will be reached in the coming week. The Virginia Department of Health reports this morning there have been 132,940 cases and 2,722 deaths statewide -- only 11 more than Friday. Some 10,218 people have been hospitalized. Henry County has had 953 cases, with 106 hospitalizations and 16 deaths. Martinsville has had 359 cases, with 55 hospitalizations and 6 deaths. Patrick County has had 250 cases including 48 hospitalizations and 13 deaths. Franklin County has had 266 cases, 15 hospitalizations and 1 death. Danville has reported 729 cases, and Pittsylvania County has had 901. Johns Hopkins University's real-time map showed 28,525,510 cases worldwide and 916,348 deaths. In the U.S. there are 6,445,960. There have been 193,036 deaths in the U.S. because of COVID-19.
