The 90-degree heat was much closer to what high school football players and coaches have become accustomed to for the first day of practice.
Just a few months after high schools had a spring football season - moved from the 2020 fall because of the coronavirus pandemic - teams were back at it to begin a much more normal season. The Virginia High School League allowed teams to begin practicing for the 2021 season on Thursday.
Magna Vista's junior varsity and varsity squads met at the school for Day 1 at 10 a.m. on Thursday, and Bassett High School's teams opted for a later start, holding the first practice at 6 p.m.
Patrick County and Martinsville High Schools both opted to take the final weekend off and will begin practicing on Monday.
Magna Vista, Bassett and Patrick County will start the season on August 27. Martinsville has a bye for Week 1 and will play the first game on Sept. 3.
