U.S. Rep. Morgan Griffith endorsed Ed Gillespie for governor Tuesday.
Southwest Virginia voters will turn out in full force for Gillespie just like they did for Donald Trump, Griffith, R-Salem, said on a statewide radio program.
The three-term congressman who was just re-elected for his fourth term called Gillespie the "right choice" on the John Fredericks Show.
“Ed has been all over Southwest Virginia and he’ll have a lot of support down here," Griffith said. "Ed has the right values, he’s a good administrator, and I think he’ll be a great governor. He worries about jobs and the folks in my end of the state who don’t have jobs.”
Gillespie, a political strategist from Fairfax County, will face several Republican challengers in a June primary. Also vying for the nomination are: Corey Stewart who chaired Donald Trump's Virginia campaign until he was fired a month before Election Day; and state Sen. Frank Wagner, R-Virginia Beach. Denver Riggleman, a distillery owner in Nelson County, also is mulling a run for governor.
Lt. Gov Ralph Northam is the presumptive Democratic nominee for governor.
