Averett women’s volleyball falls in three sets to Lynchburg

DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University women's volleyball dropped a competitive three-set match at the hands of the University of Lynchburg [RV] on Wednesday evening at the Grant Center.

Averett (1-6, 1-1 ODAC) went down 6-1 early in the opening frame but rallied back into striking distance. Back and forth from then on, a critical ace from senior outside hitter Sydney Mounce brought the score to 23-23, Lynchburg (10-1, 1-1 ODAC). However, the Hornets clinched the following two points and the first set.

The Cougars held action close in the second set, but Lynchburg's early built-on lead propelled them ahead, as large as 11-3. A 7-3 run in favor of Averett dropped the deficit down to 14-10, but the Cougars failed to catch up, and the visitors ended up with the 25-16 set win and the two-set lead.

The Hornets, receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, took a fast advantage in the third, to which they garnered themselves to a 25-9 win and the sweep.

Atop the kill leaderboard for Averett was Mounce, with seven, to go along with a service ace and two digs. Senior middle hitter Allie Lane recorded two service aces, a team high, and tied for the most block assists for the home side with senior outside hitter Tahani Villines. Villines led the Cougars in digs with 12, as well.

Freshman setter notched another double-double in assists and digs, with 12 and 11, respectively.

Averett continues its home conference stretch on Friday, Sept. 25, versus Shenandoah University. First serve that evening is set for 6:30 p.m.
